Congress Greenlights Bill to Disclose Jeffrey Epstein Records

The upper chamber of Congress on Tuesday gave swift approval to a measure that will force the release of official records related to the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, following a overwhelming vote in the House of Representatives and a shift by Donald Trump and his Republican allies. The White House relented after an extended period of trying to block the cross-party initiative involving a scandal that has plagued the president since his return to the White House.

Unanimous Passage in Congress

Senators proceeded by consensus, which needs acceptance from each senator but does not require a recorded vote, expediting the process. Just before, the House passed by a huge margin the bill on a massive majority.

“The American people have been patient long enough. The survivors have waited long enough,” the Senate Democratic leader declared in a Senate remarks on Tuesday, before requesting the Senate to approve it without opposition. “Reveal the truth. Let transparency reign.”

Future Action

The bill next goes to Donald Trump for his endorsement. He stated on Monday that he would endorse the legislation.

Though Trump has for an extended period dismissed the uproar over the authorities' approach of the Epstein case as a “false narrative”, he voiced approval for the measure over the past few days, and stated he would sign the measure if it reaches his desk.

Reaction

Democrats, along with those affected and their representatives who were watching from a viewing area, broke into applause after the bill was enacted. The sole “no” vote came from a GOP representative, who said he was concerned the measure would make public identifying details of witnesses, persons of interest and others caught up in the investigation.
